Recording Lung Function to Measure Asthma Control

Taking a lung function history quantified by fluctuation analysis may be a more accurate way to characterize the current state of a patient’s asthma control. In the report below, asthma control (as defined by the Global Initiative for Asthma) correlated significantly with two measures that determine relative change in lung function over time. The comparative usefulness of the two factors varied depending on the severity of the asthma.

RESULT: Associations between fluctuations in lung function and asthma control in two populations with differing asthma severity

A combination of spirometry and fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurements can objectively quanitfy the asthma control status of children with allergic asthma. A cross-sectional study found the two analyses together correctly identified all children with uncontrolled asthma and most of those with controlled asthma.
