FEATURED SEARCH: statin
The available evidence suggests withholding a statin in patients with an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This population-based retrospective Canadian cohort study found no association between statin use and ICH among those with a history of ischemic stroke. However, an editorial notes some limitations in the study and makes recommendations for prudent use of statins in the population at risk. Yet again, a cardiovascular prevention issue is cast into doubt. Because recurrent stroke and vascular event rates have declined substantially over the last 5 decades, primarily due to improvements in blood pressure control and more frequent use of antiplatelet therapy, secondary prevention trials now need considerably larger sample sizes to demonstrate incremental improvements in care.
