ECT for Treatment-Resistant Depression: The State of the Art

By Charles H. Kellner, MD | February 4, 2013

For patients with treatment-resistant depression, ECT is a viable treatment option—one that should no longer be relegated to the option of last resort.

Modern ECT is a remarkably safe, effective, and well-tolerated treatment, according to Charles Kellner, MD, who discusses the state-of-the-art of this mode of therapy in this video. ECT can be particularly effective for geriatric depressed patients, many of whom do not tolerate or respond well to antidepressants.

Dr Kellner is Professor of Psychiatry and Chief of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Director of the ECT Service of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

I am quite sure that Dr. Kellner would never submit to ECT for himself or his family. If it is so safe and effective, he should. (Katherine Jaconello)

To: Barbara Shackelford:

You can find a decent, albeit basic, video on ECT at the Mayo Clinic website:

And thanks to Dr. Kellner for this important commentary!

I am desperately looking for an updated video for patient and family education on ECT and cannot find anything suitable anywhere. Does anyone have suggestions? We are currently using an old video on, "Informed ECT for Patients and Families", by Dr. Max Fink that was made in the 80's. It is very dated when watching it. Please, HELP anybody!!
