Concerned about suggestions that link statin use with the onset of lupus, French researchers examined records in the French PharmacoVigilance Database between 2000 and 2010. With the exception of fluvastatin(Drug information on fluvastatin), every drug in this class was linked more strongly with lupus than with other kinds of adverse events (the risk-odds ratio was higher than one between lupus cases and non-lupus cases).

Following up on their observational reports postulating links between statins and both lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, a team from the Netherlands has confirmed in a mouse model that certain statins induce autoimmune phenomena, particularly anti-collagen antibodies, among inbred mice susceptible to arthritis. Thus they offer a causal relationship for the observed associations.
