Who are type 1 diabetes patients today? According to data collected from 67 endocrinology centers throughout the United States in the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry, the vast majority (82%) are Caucasian, only 6% use continuous glucose monitoring, and in the past year 7% report a severe hypoglycemic event (seizure or coma) and 8% had diabetic ketoacidosis. The authors show how this rich dataset can help assess associations between patient characteristics and diabetes management, including outcomes.

The registry is already generating useful information, to judge from this news report from the American Diabetes Association annual meeting. This analysis of older patients show that a large proportion of adults with type 1 diabetes do not have clinically significant renal or macrovascular disease, despite decades of living with diabetes. The authors believe this kind of analysis could yield better approaches to treatment as these patients grow older.
