For mothers-to-be, sleep loss could increase the risk for gestational diabetes-related complications. The authors of this study review the association between reduced sleep and impaired carbohydrate metabolism and discuss the mechanisms of action by which reduced sleep may adversely affect maternal and infant outcomes.

For all individuals, more frequent sleep complaints are correlated with higher insulin resistance. The authors of this study found that the likelihood of insulin resistance increased as subjects accumulated co-occurring sleep complaints, including sleep apnea, insomnia, and daytime sleepiness.
