Use Renal Insufficiency Plus Diabetes to Predict MI Complications

Checking for both renal insufficiency and diabetes can help predict which acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients will have cardiovascular complications and potentially die, according to this large prospective study. The authors suggest how to categorize patients with diabetes and/or renal insufficiency for early risk stratification of AMI.

Renal insufficiency may increase the risk of hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients with diabetes who are treated with insulin. This multicenter, prospective, randomized trial found that reducing initial glargine/glulisine insulin weight-based dosing in hospitalized patients with diabetes and renal insufficiency halved the frequency of hypoglycemia, without compromising hyperglycemia control.
