Anticipation of the discomfort of an
intramuscular injection causes anxiety
for many patients. To reduce both
pain and anxiety, ask the patient to
lean forward with elbows on the examination
table (or surface of similar
height), feet slightly wider than shoulder
width apart, and toes pointed as
far inward as is comfortable. The patient
gains some sense of control and
feels less pain during the injection.
