Another study shows that bariatric surgery not only leads to significant weight loss but to dramatic reductions in cardiovascular disease risk factors as well. This systematic review of nearly 20,000 patients found that hypertension was resolved or improved in nearly two-thirds of patients, as was diabetes in three-quarters of patients and hyperlipidemia in two-thirds of patients, nearly 5 years following surgery.

This prospective cohort study found that severely obese patients who had gastric bypass surgery had lower risk of cardiovascular and other health outcomes (including higher rates of diabetes remission) over 6 years compared to controls. An editorial in the same issue notes that, while mortality rates were too small to assess statistically, control of comorbid conditions was very good and both weight loss and associated health benefits following gastric bypass surgery were durable.
