A 31-year-old man presents with a
2-week history of a constant, dull ache
and hearing loss in the right ear. He
also complains of intermittent sharp
pains that are usually followed by
drainage through the external auditory
canal. Another practitioner diagnosed
acute otitis media with tympanic membrane
perforation, for which he prescribed
a 10-day course of amoxicillin.
The patient completed the regimen but
