Come Down to Their Level

August 3, 2010

When dealing with children, I always try to sit so that I am at eye level with them, I praise them for being brave and smart, and I make a point of being friendly to both them and their parents. Most important, I keep plenty of stickers on hand to give out.

The one exception I have found to this good advice is in children in the 9 to 24 month age range who have stranger anxiety. Getting "in their face" will cause more crying while not making eye contact with them will reduce the threat and let an exam sometimes proceed more easily.
