This 53-year-old man presented for medical attention after borrowing his wife’s eye drops for his itchy eyes. He used her drops twice a day for 3 days before the sudden appearance of swollen, itchy red eyes.

What does the bilateral eruption of the upper and lower lids suggest — and what are the potential long-term clinical implications?

Neomycin allergy.
Patients who have an allergic reaction to topical neomycin should be presumed to have an allergy to related aminoglycosides and future avoidance is recomended.
