The Case:A 29-year-old African American woman came to our rheumatology clinic with right hip pain. She had been given a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) 2 years earlier. She reported excruciating right hip pain and mild pain in her left hip on weight bearing and, occasionally, at rest. The hip pain and limitation of mobility had been worsening over the previous 3 months, she said.
Since her diagnosis with SLE, she had been receiving oral prednisone(Drug information on prednisone), 60 mg/d, and oral mycophenolate mofetil, 750 mg twice daily, for the SLE. The pain in her right hip began 1 year after starting these medications.
