Profiles Identify Typical Symptoms of Menopause

February 28, 2012

FEATURED SEARCH TERM:   “hormone therapy” adverse effects

A longitudinal look at women going through natural menopause paints a picture of their typical symptoms. This report from a study of British women, available in full text for free, identified four groups of symptoms in a profile that, the authors suggest, can help tailor advice about the likely severity and duration of symptoms during menopause.

British Medical Journal | Feb 8, 2012 (FREE FULL TEXT)

Answering the question in the featured search term above, this review summarizes the known benefits and risks of menopausal hormone therapy in cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cognitive function. Hormonal therapy plays a role in the clinical management of vasomotor symptoms, particularly during the transition to menopause, the authors say, but should not be prescribed for prevention of chronic diseases.

I just turned 53 years old, and I have never had children. My mother had a hysterectomy at 34 years of age. I have been have irregular periods for awhile now. My last one was last week with a little pain, and bright red bleeding for 6 days. Should I be concerned.? My Internest took blood panels of all hormone levels and have ordered a vaginal ultrasound . I am very worried. Please share with me anything you can.

I have had atrophic vaginitis for years and was using vagifem twice weekly plus estrace cream daily. due to antibiotic I was diagnosed with yeast infection. took l50 mg.diflucan twice weekly for one month and continued other treatment. nothing worked to relieve the redness or burning. I am now on twice weekly applicator one quarter full of estrace cream and twice daily locally for possible vulvodenia. awaiting another yeast culture. I am interested in whether estrogen actually causes yeast infections or just makes it worse. can anyone help at all.? I have lost trust in my expert on infectious diseases of the vagina!
