FEATURED SEARCH TERM: hirsutism
Besides the risk of an underlying condition implied by excess body and facial hair, the psychological distress is good reason to address the issue. In this case, a 25-year-old woman had avoided oral contraception because of the risk of worsening her hirsutism, until her engagement forced the issue. This review presents an algorithm for investigating hirsutism in women, as well as the options for treatment.

Postmenopausal virilization can be a challenge to diagnose, because the hirsutism may be innocuous or may trace to an adrenal or ovarian tumor. The authors of this case study and review found that combined ovarian and adrenal sampling led to successful resolution of the problem.
