Gulati traces her interest in medicine to her mother, a physicist who was once steered away from medicine because it was considered a male field, and to the early death of a parent under a physician's missed diagnosis. 

Her path toward cardiology solidified in medical school at the University of Toronto, where a mentor's invitation into the catheterization laboratory proved decisive.
