Jacquelyn M. Powers, MD, MS, is section chief of hematology at Texas Children's Hospital and associate professor in the department of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. She chaired the ASH panel that wrote the iron deficiency diagnosis guidelines.
She is an expert in the management of iron deficiency anemia, with expertise in both oral iron supplementation and the indications for and use of intravenous iron therapy. Her research aims to better identify patients at risk for iron deficiency and find the most successful treatment approach for children and adolescents with iron deficiency anemia. She is particularly interested in patient-centered outcomes such as fatigue and quality of life in children treated with oral or intravenous iron.
She also served as a lead author of a revised American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) clinical report, published in the July 2026 issue of Pediatrics, which was the first major update to pediatric iron deficiency guidance in nearly a decade
