The Asthma - Allergy Intersection, with Payel Gupta, MD

Published on:

Allergic disease and asthma have become distinctly linked among a significant proportion of patients. A pulmonologist and allergist review diagnostics, guidelines and research relevant to the interplay.

In commemoration of Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, the May 2023 episode of Lungcast is dedicated to a discussion on the increasingly understood interplay of allergic disease and asthmatic burden.

American Lung Association (ALA) chief medical officer Al Rizzo, MD, interviews New York-based allergist Payel Gupta, MD, on a number of topics surrounding the diagnosis, treatment, and research of allergy, asthma, and allergic asthma. Gupta is the medical director of allergy, asthma, immunology and ENT at LifeMD.com, a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai, and co-host of The Itch Podcast.

After reviewing the modern phenotyping and endotyping of asthma, Gupta guided Rizzo through the current understanding of the “atopic march,” which has become more prominently observed in young patients. The pair additionally review best asthma diagnosis practices, protocol for progression to biologic therapy, and how expert-guided asthma strategies may shape future clinical research.

Lungcast is a monthly respiratory health podcast series from the ALA produced by HCPLive.
