This interim report of an ongoing study has indicated an overall positive impression of the INFUSE for Astigmatism contact lens among a 100-patient population.
The INFUSE for Astigmatism (IfA) contact lens (CL) is largely reported to provide consistently clear vision and is easy to handle, according to an interim report from a real-world evaluation study presented at the 2025 American Optometric Association Conference in Minneapolis, MN.
Astigmatism prevalence is on the rise globally, with the rate in the US alone reaching 36.2%. Although contact lenses are one of the most prominent solutions, a significant dropout rate, averaging 22% across multiple studies, has hindered their effectiveness. Discomfort and dissatisfaction have been cited across a variety of investigations as the primary factors for these dropouts.2
This interim report, presented by Gina Wesley, OD, on behalf of the Real-World Toric Contact Lens Experience Study Team, Complete Eye Care of Medina, included the first 100 patients to complete the trial. Of these, 73% were female, and the mean (Standard Deviation [SD]) age was 37.9 years (13.9). Additionally, 58% of these first 100 patients wore CLs previously; the remainder had worn prescription eyeglasses.1
Investigators had eye care providers invite eligible astigmatic patients to wear IfA CLs for 5 days. Patients then completed an online survey designed to assess their satisfaction at the end of the study period. In particular, patients were given questions regarding vision clarity during physical activities and when involved in near-work activities. ECPs who fitted ≥3 patients were also given an online survey to report their experience.1
Of the first 100 patients, 87% wore the IfA CL for the full 5-day period. Mean (SD) length of wear was 4.7 (0.9) days. Additionally, 63% of participants wore the CL for ≥10 hours/day, averaging a mean (SD) daily wear time of 10.4 (2.9) hours/day.1
At the end of the study period, investigators found 93% of patients agreed or strongly agreed on the ease of handling the IfA CL. An additional 92% rated their overall opinion of the lens as “good”, “very good”, or “excellent”. 89% were likely to continue with the IfA lens after the initial wear period, and 96% were likely to recommend the IfA CL to CL-wearing friends or family. 94% of participants also agreed on the importance of ECPs educating themselves on innovative eye health technologies.1
Patient experience surveys also indicated 80% of patients reported consistently clear vision throughout the day, and 80.6% reported the reduction of halos and glare, even in low-light conditions (this measure accounted for 100% of patients with self-reported halos or glare). 90.9% reported clear vision when engaged in near-work activities such as working on the computer or cell phone, and 86.3% reported clear vision for physical activities.1
ECP experience surveys have not been reported at this time, due to the ongoing nature of the study.
Investigators have concluded, based on these interim data, a general satisfaction measure of the IfA lens among patients. Although the insight is still early, investigators believe it to be indicative of the eventual full results at the trial’s conclusion.1
