A survey study has indicated a substantially positive perspective on UMFfA contact lenses, including reports on well-maintained vision, comfort, and ease of fitting.
A recent study presented at the 2025 American Optometric Association Conference in Minneapolis, MN, investigated the real-world satisfaction with the ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism (UMFfA) contact lens (CL) among existing wearers and their eye care providers (ECPs).1
Multifocal contact lenses have emerged as one of the leading solutions for presbyopia compensation. Given that the condition affects a substantial portion of the population, and despite their potential, the market penetration of multifocal contact lenses has remained relatively low. This trend has been attributed in the past to a lack of knowledge, a complex fitting process, and insufficient visual performance.2
Presented by Kriti Bhagat, OD, Eyediology Vision, the survey study investigated 2914 patients from 11 European countries between 2021-2022. Eligible patients had astigmatism and were either existing CL wearers or new CL wearers (either without prior vision correction or currently wearing vision-correcting spectacles).1
Bhagat and colleagues provided questionnaires to each patient to record satisfaction based on overall comfort, vision, ease of transition between distances, and handling. Their responses were given based on a 5-point scale (very dissatisfied – very satisfied) or agreement with each statement (strongly disagree – strongly agree).1
Of the 2914 included patients, 52.1% (n = 1519) were existing CL wearers; of these, 86.7% had been wearing CLs for ≥4 years and 45.8% for ≥10 years. Additionally, 50.4% had worn toric CLs previously, while 31.8% wore MFCLs and 9.2% previously worn toric MFCLs. The mean age was 51 (40-60+).1
After the study was concluded, investigators reported 81% of all patients were satisfied or very satisfied overall with the UMFfA CLs. 93% reported ease of handling, 80% reported they provided ease of transition between distances, 91% reported satisfaction with comfort throughout the day, and 86% reported satisfaction with comfort at the end of the day.1
High proportions of existing wearers across CL types also reported they would continue to wear UMFfA CLs. 86% of toric CL wearers, 83% of MFCL wearers, 81% of toric MFCL wearers, and 92% of spherical CL wearers agreed they would continue to wear the lenses, and 76% of all existing CL wearers reported UMFfA CLs were superior to their previous vision correction.1
ECPs were given a similar questionnaire with the added questions on ease of fitting and stability and consistency of clear vision provided by UMFfA CLs. In total, 81% reported stable and consistently clear vision near, far, and in-between. 92% of ECPs reported UMFfA CLs remain as comfortable at the end of the day as the beginning, and 94% reported ease of handling. 94% also reported ease of fitting, and 92% called the fitting guide for the UMFfA CLs simple and straightforward.1
Additionally, by the end of the study, 91% of interviewed ECPs would consider UMFfA CLs as their first option for patients needing multifocal toric correction. 90% also stated they would recommend the lenses to a colleague, and 4 of 5 existing CL wearers were fitted within ≤3 trial CLs total per patient.1
“In essence, you can see here from the study that patients, especially our existing contact lens wearers, and eye care providers, were highly satisfied with the ULTRA Multifocal for Astigmatism contact lens,” Bhagat said.1
